The controversial issues of formation, functioning and reorganization of psychological defense mechanisms in ontogenesis and in personality disorders as they are treated in classical and new psychoanalysis, cognitivism and communications theory are discussed. The author points out the role of cognitive organisation (style), symbolic mediation, the representative system of object relations and attachments in individual typological variability of the organization of defense mechanisms, effectiveness of personal and social adjustment, maturity and spiritual health of personality.
