A typology of basic values based on unconscious comparison
(RESUME)

Analysis of people's value choices requires looking at unconscious foundations of these choices, which potentially is a way towards discovering the implicit structure of basic values. A projective technique devised by the author was used on 1512 subjects in an attempt to overcome phenomenology in investigating consciousness. Data on unconscious appraisal of basic values with the help of universal graphic symbols revealed a cluster structure of value choices and enabled the author to construct a visual representation of a values outlook. It has been proved that there are only three value blocks that determine people's choices. Although the subjects did not receive any specific instructions, the data presented clear foundations for classification of values. The data obtained on the structure and typology of values has been compared with findings of M. Rokeach and S. Schwartz.
