The author treats artistic imagination as an ability to create a sensually perceivable image bearing "supersensual" content. The article discusses ways of diagnosing the sense of material, one of the less researched aspects of artistic imagination, which enables one to take into account properties of the material while forming an artistic conception. The author presents an original technique for discovering a sense of material in children and adults, irrespective of the level of professional training.
