Comprehension of emotions by preschoolers
(RESUME)

The development of preschoolers' ability to comprehend own emotional states and those of other people was studied as a manifestation of "model of psyche". There were 230 participants 3-6 years old. Children 3-4 years of age were more successful in comprehending emotions by situation characteristics (causal attribution) than by facial expressions. In the drawings own emotions were expressed in the form of portrait showing that young children view own emotions as belonging to a human being as a bearer of psyche, though someone else's emotional states were expressed in symbolic form, mirroring typical notions of emotions. Only 5-6 olds were able to present in drawings own emotions and those of other people as adequate facial expressions. The comprehension of emotions shows general characteristics of the development of "model of psyche" and is formed only when the child is 5 years old.
