Analytical introspection and short-term sensory deprivation as means of modifying consciousness
(RESUME)

The paper describes new methods for achieving an altered state of mind - analytical introspection (AI) and short-term (10 minutes) sensory deprivation (SSD). An experiment has demonstrated that these methods bring about significant changes in the character of mental functioning which are identified as indicators of the altered state of consciousness (IASC) and are reflected in self-accounts, because AI and SSD cause transition to IASC. Either technique is specific as far as phenomenology of states brought about with their help. Degree of expression of changes in self-awareness and perception, strengthening of imagery and sense transformations were significantly higher in AI, while changes in the body image and alertness were more pronounced in SSD.
