The paper discusses data of an experimental study of teaching meaningful reading, analyzing factors obstructing understanding of the meaning of a work of fiction. The author puts forward the idea and describes operations of iconic reconstruction of a text as a method of the reader's interaction with the work of fiction raising the level of understanding.
