The findings of an empirical study of dynamics of discrepancy between the realistic self and the ideal self in primary school children, with the help of a specifically designed technique are discussed. The study has discovered that by the end of the primary school age the discrepancy grows, mainly due to a drop in the indices of the realistic self; the ideal self hardly undergoes any change in that age. The study has revealed four kinds of the discrepancy - the unstable, the gradual, the anticipatory unstable and the retarded.
