On the basis of D.B. Elkonin's ideas on meaningful and operational aspects of an action the author analyzes sociocultural prototypes of the action proving that the trial action is a unit of human development. The author also discusses basic notions of developmental psychology, such as the ideal form, the event, screening as the content of the trial action.
