The methodology of "the experience of the flow" has been used to study hacker activity. The findings show a wave-like nature of correlation between hacker competence and "the experience of the flow" motivation. The article contains information on the social structure of hacker community and its heterogeneity, pointing out two varieties of their motivation - cognitive and social, and focusing on inner motivation of a hacker and its link to hacker competence.
