The author analyzes the principal tenets of the theory of activity which provoked a disagreement between A.N. Leontiev and P.Ya. Galperin, with a special emphasis on the development of the operational structure of human activity. The article is based not only on the published works of the two scientists, but also on conversations witnessed by the author.
