Machiavellianism, manipulative behaviour and mutual understanding in interpersonal communication
(RESUME)

The article describes a four-part structure of mutual understanding in communication partners and analyzes similarities and differences in the psychological phenomena of manipulation and personal machiavellianism. Subjects with a high degree of machiavellianism display rigidity in communication. The author discusses personal and value-oriented causes of rigidity inhibiting mutual understanding. These causes are: the emotional coldness syndrome, low empathy, domination of social status values over moral, overestimation of manipulation as an effective method of communication, the feeling of personal superiority, ignoring the partner's psychological peculiarities.
