Characteristics of psychological time in chronic alcoholics
(RESUME)

61 men aged from 23 to 50 diagnosed as chronic alcoholics in the II or III stage, and 61 men in the control group were studied with the objective of finding out peculiarities of psychological time on the basis of individual laterality profiles (ILP) described by means of indices in the reference system "hand-ear-eye". The findings demonstrate reliable differences in time orientations, in perception and experiencing of time. Alcoholics tend to over- or underestimate time intervals against the standard as well as against the indices of the control group; their time orientation is linked more to the past than to the present. Patients demonstrate accumulation of left-hand lateral characteristics and abnormal distribution of ILP. Patients show no individual variations in psychological time which may be due to the effects of alcohol intoxication leveling brain asymmetry. The findings may be used as additional diagnostic criteria as well as for prevention purposes.
