The problem of and technique for self-determination of personality
(RESUME)

The article looks at factors allowing a person to achieve self-determination and conditions leading to their emergence. The study was carried out in the context of the psychology of a "possible" man, i.e. a person that can emerge, not the one that is already in existence. The methodological basis for the study is M.K. Mamardashvili's theory. Self-determination is viewed as self-sufficiency, and also as freedom from self. The article also discusses the potential of cultural symbols used as psychological instruments. The psychological techniques involving symbols were borrowed from K. Durkheim's Centre for Initial Therapy (Germany).
